Jacksonville Music Contest Receives National Attention

9/8/2013

The Boathouse Cello Choir of Jacksonville is an ensemble of amateur cellists actively seeking new works to perform. As a result, they have established a Composition Contest to encourage amateur and professional composers to create original works specifically for the choir. The Contest has a prize purse of $1,000 donated by the Florida Radiation Oncology Group, one of two major sponsors of the project.

The Contest was announced on September 1st with promotional material sent to hundreds of individual composers, high school and university music professors, as well as professional associations. The Society of Composers, Inc. has announced the Contest through its newsletter reaching over 1,200 members throughout the United States and Canada.

While the Contest has an entry deadline of February 1st, 2014, composers from San Francisco, Chicago, and several northeastern states have already sent in music scores to Contest officials. “The styles of music we are seeing range from Classical to Swing, and even experimental New Age” says Jack Feeney, Contest Manager. “We’re also hearing from music students and professional composers looking for more information about the cello choir in order to customize music for the choir.”

After the entry deadline, the cello choir will review all entries and select the Finalists. The Finalists’ compositions will then be performed in concert at the ballroom of the historic Carling Hotel in downtown Jacksonville on April 5th, 2014. Following the performance, the Contest winners will be announced and prizes awarded. “We are extremely grateful to our sponsors for the prizes and for such a classy concert venue” says Feeney. “However, we are still looking for additional sponsors. We’d like see all the Finalists come away with something.”

Tickets for the April 5th concert will be available soon after the Finalists are announced. While the cost of the tickets will be nominal, the number of tickets available to the public may be limited due to the size of the concert hall.
